AmaZulu FC central defender Tapelo Xoki is targeting Nedbank Cup glory ahead of the new 2020/21 season.
The 25-year-old player had a solid 2019/20 season in which he made 26 appearances across all competitions for Usuthu.
Xoki is eager to add some goals to his game after he failed to score in the recent season, but he has netted nine goals for Usuthu since he joined the club in 2014.
Usuthu are set to start their 2020/21 DStv Premiership campaign with a clash against Orlando Pirates at the Jonsson Kings Park Stadium on October 24.
“Personally, I have set myself some targets. I would like to be on the scoresheet a bit more,” Xoki said.
“I have set myself a target of at least six goals for this season and play more games obviously and be more consistent than the previous season and achieve greater heights.”
The last time AmaZulu won a major trophy in 1992 when the team defeated Kaizer Chiefs in the final of the Coca Cola Cup (Telkom Knockout Cup).
Unfortunately, there will not be a Telkom Knockout competition in the upcoming campaign as the partnership between the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and Telkom has ended.
Xoki, who joined the AmaZulu from Old Mutual Football Academy in 2014, is keen to help the KwaZulu-Natal giants finish the upcoming season on a high by clinching the Nedbank Cup.
“Team-wise we would like to have some cup. It is a fact that we feel that we have not done well in the cup competitions,” he added.
“So, since the Telkom Knockout Cup won’t be around this season, the only chance we will get is the Nedbank Cup.”
Usuthu reached the Nedbank Cup final ten years ago, but the team lost to Bidvest Wits at the FNB Stadium which was the first match at the venue after having been refurbished for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Xoki is also determined to help AmaZulu secure a top-eight finish in the DStv Premiership and he also stressed the importance of performing well at the beginning of the season.
“We will put our focus on that and make sure we finish as high as possible in the league which we are very capable of doing,” he continued.
“Hopefully, we will have a good start that will build us a foundation for the remainder of the season. So, we would like to win the Nedbank Cup and finish in the top eight in the league.”Share
