AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy has been named as the 2020-21 DStv Premiership Coach of the Month for January/February, while Tapelo Xoki’s terrific free-kick winner against Bloemfontein Celtic has been recognized as the Goal of the Month for the same period.
Usuthu collected 15 points in eight games played across January and February. Under the guidance of the Cape Town born coach and his technical team, Usuthu scored 11 goals and kept three clean sheets which, in the process saw them embark on an impressive seven-game unbeaten league run, after losing to Kaizer Chiefs on January 13.
Upon receiving his award McCarthy, 43, lauded his technical team and players for their collective hard work.
“I am very humbled and very grateful, but I think it is always beautiful, and nice when you work hard and achieve things, but in our job there is no I in team,” said McCarthy.
“I cannot solely take the credit for receiving the Coach of the Month award, I have got an amazing technical team group who are behind me and have worked with me to ensure that the players’ every need is covered so that they can go out there and perform, and win football matches.
“As much as it is mine, it is theirs as the technical team too but also the biggest credit must go to the players. They go out there each and every weekend to play matches and put in the hard work,” he added.
McCarthy’s Usuthu beat an unpredictable Bloemfontein Celtic and Baroka FC, triumphed against Steve Barker’s Stellenbosch FC and Gavin Hunt’s Chiefs at FNB Stadium, while they secured draws against title-chasing SuperSport United and Swallows FC as well as provincial neighbours Maritzburg United.
AmaZulu FC defender Tapelo Xoki, 26, was equally pleased after getting the nod from the public and football supporters alike for his stunning strike against Siwelele, which was deemed a worthy Goal of the Month winner. His goal, a brilliantly struck free-kick in referee’s optional time in a thrilling 4-3 win over Celtic was voted the best of the 10 nominated goals.
“I would like to thank everyone who voted for me,” said Xoki. “It means a lot. It is rare you find a defender getting a goal of the month, it is a great feeling and it just adds to the year that we have been having. Hopefully, it continues, and we hope that everyone out there keeps on supporting us.”Share
