AmaZulu FC starlet Sphesihle Maduna was recently nominated for the Fan Choice Awards Young Player of the Season accolade.
The 20-year-old playmaker’s nomination is a reward for his commitment and hard work in the 2019/20 campaign.
Maduna stepped up when his team needed him the most as Usuthu looked to retain their status in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
The South Africa under-23 international was one of AmaZulu’s top performers in the bio-bubble as the team battled for survival.
Prior to coach Ayanda Dlamini’s appointment in March 2020, Maduna was already a regular in the starting line-up.
His exploits caught the eye of the national team selectors and he was included in South Africa’s provisional squad for the 2020 Olympic Games.
The 78-man squad includes Maduna’s teammate Bonginkosi Ntuli, but the global competition has been postponed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Maduna made 21 appearances across all competitions for Usuthu and registered two assists before the 2019/20 season was halted by COVID-19 in March 2020.
The diminutive attacker came back revitalized following the break which was enforced by the coronavirus pandemic as he produced impressive displays in the bio-bubble.
Maduna started five of Usuthu’s last six league matches under coach Dlamini after the restart and he was a constant thorn in the side of opposition’s defence.
His wonderful long-range strike against Stellenbosch FC on 02 August 2020 was his first goal of the season and it earned AmaZulu a vital point as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Maduna then registered an assist as the KwaZulu-Natal giants ended the season with a 1-1 draw with Highlands Park and draw saw AmaZulu finish 13th in the league.
The 2019/20 season proved to be a breakthrough season for Maduna, who made 27 appearances across all competitions and the sky is the limit for the talented midfielder.Share
