Benni McCarthy and Veli Mothwa score DSTV Premiership monthly awards

McCarthy and Mothwa were announced as recipients of the DStv Premiership monthly awards for Coach of the Month and Player of the Month (March/April) after the club’s near-perfect DStv Premiership record which also saw them emerge Q3 winners last week.

McCarthy’s Usuthu began the month of March with a 1-0 victory over SuperSport United and went on to further triumph in six more games and played to a draw against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns – the only game they failed to score in out of eight outings. During this period, AmaZulu scored an impressive 13 goals and conceded only twice.

This is the second award in successive months for McCarthy since he returned to the DStv Premiership late last year and is only the second coach to be honoured this season, with only Swallows FC coach Brandon Truter winning in October/November and December/January.

The 43-year-old Usuthu mentor thanked his fellow technical staff members and players upon receiving his accolade.

“For the hard work, the dedication we put in every single day and to be voted by our peers it is always a special moment. We are forever grateful and proud. We will continue to work hard so that we can inspire the next generation of football players, the next generation of coaches but also our colleagues,” McCarthy added.

A jubilant Mothwa remarked: “I am speechless. It feels good, for the first time receiving an award like this. I feel relieved that at least this season I am getting one trophy and taking it home,” said Mothwa.

Mothwa, who joined Usuthu from Chippa United in the first round, has been a rock in the last line of defence for the eThekwini-based side, producing several match-winning performances and keeping six clean sheets in his side’s eight games during this period.

The 30-year-old Mothwa also received a well-deserved call up to the national team in March. McCarthy and Mothwa was selected by a combination of votes from a panel of local football experts made up of commentators, presenters, online and print media and radio broadcasters.
