AmaZulu look to keep up fine form

AmaZulu will look to keep up their fine form in the DStv Premiership when they face hosts Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on the afternoon of Wednesday 17 February 2021, kick-off at 3pm CAT.

AmaZulu were last in action on Sunday 14 February, holding Swallows FC to a goalless stalemate at the Dobsonville Stadium.

“We weren’t our usual selves, that was probably our worst performance under my leadership since taking over,” said coach Benni McCarthy after the 0-0 draw with the Birds. “Lots still to build on, lots to take from this.”

He added, “We have to regroup and refocus our energy, and hopefully a better AmaZulu team pitches up [against Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday].”

The performance and the result may not have fully satisfied McCarthy, but Usuthu nonetheless continued their strong form: that’s now six games unbeaten in the league and an impressive haul of 10 points from the last 12 up for grabs to sit in an impressive seventh place on the log – two places and four points ahead of their midweek opponents.

Chiefs are winless in their last three league matches, the most recent of which was a 2-1 reverse against arch rivals Orlando Pirates in late January.

The Amakhosi, however, will be better rested coming into the game after they had their scheduled CAF Champions League match away to Wydad Casablanca postponed this past weekend.

In head-to-head stats, AmaZulu and Chiefs have met in 59 league matches since 1985. The Amakhosi have claimed 37 wins compared to eight for Usuthu, while 14 games have been drawn. The Soweto side has won 21 of their 30 home league matches against their Durban counterparts, suffering three defeats in the process.

The teams met in the Premiership as recently as 13 January this season, with Chiefs claiming a 1-0 away win thanks to an early goal from Samir Nurkovic. The result ended a seven-game winless streak for the Amakhosi at the time.
