AmaZulu’s Under-17 team will be looking at defending their title in this year’s Engen Under-17 Knockout Challenge taking place from 17-19 July at the Moses Mabhida outer fields.
On Wednesday the 16 teams which will be participating were announced. Players taking part in this year’s tournament will also have the opportunity to receive some mentorship from former Bafana Bafana player Jabu Mahlangu.
“Jabu is an ambassador of this tournament through our relationship we have with SuperSport. This will give the boys a great chance to learn from someone who has walked the journey and knows the good and bad of football,” said Engen Sponsorship Manager Brad Bergh.
The theme this year is ‘Live your dreams’ and Engen has brought in respected football fundis as scouts, including former Banyana Banyana coach Bongani Yengwa and Golden Arrows development coach Nhlanhla Mshibe.
The four teams that qualifiers by the virtue of their status include last year’s winner AmaZulu, Celtic from Pietermaritzburg, Golden Arrows and Chelsea from Durban South.
Tournament Director Mpho Dintwa encouraged the importance of playing fairly and having fun as well.
“We encourage teams to bring in the correct aged players and make sure that they do not try to win at all cost. Last year we had AmaZulu as the winners of the tournament and they had a great opportunity of representing KZN in the Champ of Champs in Johannesburg,” said Dintwa.
This is how the teams were drawn.
