Usuthu target victory against Sundowns

AmaZulu will welcome Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership match at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

Kick-off is at 15h00.

Usuthu are looking to return to winning ways in the league having lost 3-0 to Bidvest Wits away on August 29.

This was the KwaZulu-Natal giants’ second defeat of the season and as a result, they are placed fifth on the league standings having collected six points from four games.

Prolific striker Mhlengi Cele, who netted the winning goal for Usuthu against Free State Stars last month, will be keen to inspire Cavin Johnson’s side to victory.

Meanwhile, Sundowns have not been in league action since August 22, when they were held to a goalless draw at home by Highlands Park.

As a result, the defending champions are placed sixth on the league standings having accumulated five points from three games.

Pitso Mosimane, the Sundowns head coach, will look to inspirational defender Ricardo Nascimento, who has netted twice this season.

In head-to-head stats, Sundowns and AmaZulu have met in 55 league matches since 1985.

The Brazilians have claimed 36 wins compared to seven for Usuthu, while 12 matches have been drawn.

The Durban side has won just two of their 28 home matches in the rivalry, suffering 20 defeats in the process.

Last season, the teams won in each other’s backyards, with AmaZulu triumphing 2-1 in Tshwane in the first half of the campaign.

The return game in Durban saw Sundowns claim a 3-1 victory.
