Usuthu out to maintain winning momentum

AmaZulu will be eyeing another win in the National First Division (NFD) when they take on Santos at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 15h30.

Usuthu and the People’s Team clashed in the Nedbank Cup qualifier in midweek. AmaZulu won 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Cape Town.

This was Usuthu’s second consecutive competitive win as they had beaten Royal Eagles 3-2 at home in a league game last weekend before facing Santos.

Boysen Mbatha scored Usuthu’s first goal, while Vukile Mngqibisa and Lungelo Dlamini grabbed second half goals to hand the home side the victory.

The victory ended Usuthu’s three match winless run in the league. They had recorded two defeats and one draw during their winless run.

AmaZulu sit ninth on the NFD standings with 17 points from 13 matches. They are five points behind third-placed Stellenbosch.

Simphiwe Lumkwana, who scored for Usuthu against Santos in midweek, will be hoping to hit the back of the net again and inspire his side to victory.

Usuthu head coach Joey Antipas will be eager to mastermind another victory to maintain their winning momentum in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Santos will be desperate to avoid another defeat when they host a rejuvenated AmaZulu side in the Mother City.

The People’s Team were narrowly beaten 2-1 by University of Pretoria away in their last league game last weekend.

The defeat extended Santos’ winless run in the league to 12 matches. They have registered eight draws and four defeats during their current run.

As a result Santos are placed 15th on the NFD standings with 11 points 13 matches. They are only two points ahead of 16th placed Magesi FC.

Ashley Hartog is one of the People’s Team’s key players. The former SuperSport United midfielder will look to use his experience to help Santos win.

Santos coach Zeca Marques is under pressure at the moment. The experienced trainer will be hoping that his side end their winless run against Usuthu.

Last season, AmaZulu and Santos drew 2-2 in the league first round encounter, before playing to a 1-1 stalemate in the second round.
