AmaZulu lost 2-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic in the four-team pre-season Charity Showdown at Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg.
AmaZulu looked the more dominant side in the first half despite having the more youthful starting line up of the two teams.
Vuyani Ntanga scored in the 72nd minute to give Phunya sele sele the lead after Usuthu failed to deal with a throw in, for the second time on the day.
Left-back Sifiso Hlanti was a livewire for Craig Rosslee’s troops as he went forward all afternoon to provide telling crosses into the box while also putting on the work at the back in assisting with the marshalling of Celtic danger man, Frank Mhango.
Sunday Bale came face to face with the keeper in the 34th minute but could not put the ball past the Celtics minder who’d advanced way out of goal.
On a rare occasion Celtic came close to taking the lead when Lerato Lamola came close in the 56th minute when he came face to face with Aubrey Mathibe but only to shoot straight to the Usuthu keeper.
The second goal came through a brilliant solo effort from Malawian striker Mhango who beat Hlanti on the right flank and powered home with a right foot.
Usuthu had won 2-1 against Mpumalanga Black Aces earlier on in the day with goals from central defenders Sedate Ouro-Akoriko and Carlington Nyadombo.
The showdown proved a worthy platform for both sides as coaches were able to field five substitute players per game.Share
