AmaZulu beat Mamelodi Sundowns 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw on Saturday which saw them crowned winners of the Uthungulu Mayoral Cup at Umhlathuze Stadium in Richards Bay.
AmaZulu had arrived at the final after beating Milford FC 2-0 on Saturday morning with a team that consisted of mainly their Under 17 players.
On the other hand Sundowns had beaten Thanda Royal Zulu 4-0 to book themselves a spot in the final.
In the first half, Ayanda Dlamini made a good run inside the box before finding Bornwell Mwape who couldn’t find a good first touch as the ball slipped off his feet.
Katlego Mashego also threatened for Sundowns but Thapelo Nyongo was on top of his game as he made sure that nobody got away from him.
Nkanyiso Zungu sent in a great strike, but Wayne Sandilands tipped it over the cross bar.
Asavela Mbekile wasted a good opportunity after Rheece Evans had made a good run, before passing the ball inside the box.
In the 40th minute AmaZulu continued to attack and their effort was rewarded as Bornwell Mwape hit a brilliant strike which gave Sandilands no chance.
In the dying minutes of the first half Sundowns found an equalizer through a set piece fromKaletso Magkalwa.
In the second half Samuel Julies missed a good chance for Downs before Hlompho Kekana’s set piece went close.
The 1-1 draw ended with a penalty shootout and Usuthu came out on top.Share
