AmaZulu players and technical staff returned to training on Monday morning to prepare for the second half of the Absa Premiership season.
Usuthu are currently in seventh place on the log standings with 20 points from 15 matches and will resume their campaign with a home game against Orlando Pirates on January 23.
“We are back and we are happy with the fitness levels of the players,” said the club’s fitness conditioning coach Burger van der Merwe.
“The players have just returned from the short break but it looks like everyone followed their training plans.
“Over the next few weeks we’ll work at gradually getting the players to be in peak condition for the first competitive match of the year on January 23.”
Usuthu will then play against Supersport United on January 28 before facing Ajax Cape Town on February 4 and Van De Merwe believes they will benefit from their early return.
“Our second half starts earlier than other teams and hopefully that will work in our favour because we won’t have a long break,” he added.
“We’ll be able to continue with normal training and also try to improve on other things but it won’t feel like another pre-season.
“Chances are we’ll also receive some new players as the transfer window progresses so we’ll have to bring them up to speed as well.”
Usuthu have already confirmed the acquisition of midfielders Ruzaigh Gamildien and Nhlanhla Tshabalala.
