AmaZulu FC captain Tapelo Nyongo says winning the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premiers Cup was good for the club’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) preparations.
Usuthu won this year’s pre-season tournament after defeating Richards Bay FC 1-0 in the final at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban on Sunday afternoon.
Nyongo, who is a defender by trade, scored the only of the match with a wonderful long-range strike in the first-half against the National First Division (NFD) side.
“It was a big confidence booster for us because we are starting our league campaign this weekend,” Nyongo said.
“So, we needed to do well in the KZN Premiers Cup which was very competitive for us.
Usuthu had defeated NFD outfit Real Kings 4-2 on penalties in a semi-final encounter which ended in a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time on Sunday morning.
“Everyone got a chance to play which is good for us because we played two games. We worked hard and luckily we won the cup,” he added.
The 23-year-old player also discussed his thunderous strike which inspired Usuthu to victory in the final.
“It is one of a kind because I had never scored during the run of play. I normally score from set-pieces.
“So, it felt good to score during the run of play,” he concluded.
AmaZulu will open their 2018/19 campaign against Baroka FC in an Absa Premiership match at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.
Kick-off is at 20h15.Share
