Usuthu U13 Coach and former AmaZulu midfielder Nhlanhla “Shakes” Zwane spent the weekend in Bulwer at the Build It U13 football tournament which featured 12 local teams and primary schools.
Although there was one winner after the dust settled on 20 October at Bhambatha sports grounds, Shakes says all the locals ought to be proud as United Stars cheered the loudest after defeating Bulwer Primary 4-3 on penalties in the final.
“First of all, I want to thank the sponsors for the opportunity and invitation to such a great tournament for youngsters. It was just as a good experience for me as it was to the young boys displaying their talent.”
“The support from parents and the public was great, they came out in numbers to support the kids. There were too many players with potential. As a club we’ll always take advantage and scout a few of the youngsters to look at them more closely during training with our under 13s,” said Zwane.
The tournament was hosted by Bulwer Build It owned by Iain Knox with support from senior local municipality and councillors.
The Deputy Mayor of the Nkosana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality, Philani Shange thanked Build It and AmaZulu for inspiring the youngsters and the greater community.
“Sports has the ability to bring youth together and keep them occupied since we know the obstacles that they face which include alcohol abuse, and teenage pregnancy among other things.
“What’s more encouraging is that if you keep them engaged in sport you can develop stars, so this tournament goes a long way and it is quite appreciated since it also gives the local parents much hope for their children,” said Shange.
AmaZulu’s U19s squared off against the local U20 squad under the watchful eye of Coach Bukasa Kasonga who used the run as a scouting exercise and preparation for their upcoming 2018/19 season in the SAFA SAB U21 League.
