Malajila gives Sundowns the win


A second half goal by striker Cuthbert Malajila gave Mamelodi Sundowns a 1-0 win over AmaZulu in an Absa Premiership match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday night.

Coming to this match AmaZulu were looking to upset Sundowns and they showed exactly that in the beginning of the match as they put up a big fight.

But it was Cuthbert Malajila who made Usuthu pay for allowing too much space in their danger zone, as the Zimbabwean scored the only goal of the match which saw them clinching a 1-0 victory.

AmaZulu welcomed visitors Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and started the game well, showing more control of the ball in the first five minutes of the match.

Debutant and new AmaZulu signing from Durban Warriors Thabiso Dlamini impressed as he was the first to test the Sundowns keeper.

In the 15th minute John Arwuah came close to opening the scoring for AmaZulu but his shot went wide.

In the 25 minute a shot by Khama Billiat went wide of the right-hand post as Sundowns searched for a goal.

Bafana Bafana player Bongani Ndulula pulled off a powerful shot in the 32 minute but it went wide of goal.

Both teams tried to attack but they could not find the back of the net which resulted in the match going into break at 0-0.

The second half began at a high intensity and it was Teko Modise and Malajila who were causing some trouble for Usuthu.

In the 53rd minute, Malajila broke the deadlock as he put his team into a one nil lead through a good finish taking Sundowns to a 1-0 lead.

After this goal, Zungu came close to doubling the score but Aubrey Mathibe made a great double save in the 53rd minute.

In the 88th minute Ayanda Dlamini kept on searching for an equalizer but his strike was saved by Sundowns keeper Onyango.

Despite all this AmaZulu never gave up and they kept on fighting and it was Bongi Ntuli and substitute Ooko who tried hard to find the back of the net but to no success.

The last chance for AmaZulu came in optional time when Ntuli’s header went wide from a set piece that was taken by Marc Van Heerden.
