Ajax Cape Town failed to move up the log as they played out to a goalless Absa Premiership draw at Cape Town Stadium to AmaZulu on Friday evening.
In hope of keeping their chances of staying in the Absa Premiership alive, Ajax knew that they had to turn around their fortunes and somehow take points from a resurgent AmaZulu side.
Jan Versleijen was taking no chances in his line-up and was going for the attacking Zimbabwean duo Khama Billiat and Paul Rusike to partner Mahbuti Khenyeza upfront.
Sander Westerveld’s ‘Man of the Match’ display against AmaTuks saw him favoured over Sean Roberts in goal, continuing the debate over who should start.
The fixture got off to an exciting start with the play flowing freely from end-to-end and it was Ajax who was called into question first when Nazeer Allie had to make a clearance off the line, 16 minutes in.
Moments later and the defender performed another great interception when he threw his body in front of Goodman Dlamini’s shot- the 27-year-old lucky to get away with it as replays show it was a hand ball.
Nkanyiso Cele was the first player to be put into the referee’s book when he challenged the Wanderson on the corner of the box, just before the half hour.
Billiat stood up to take the set-piece, but his effort lacked the edge and it was easy for AmaZulu’s goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini to rush off his line and make the save.
Mabhuti Khenyeza then stung the palms of the away shot-stopper with an effort from the edge of the box, as the two teams played out the remaining goalless five minutes of the half.
The home side came out commanding the first ten minutes of the second half, winning a series of corner kicks; however they failed to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal.
On the stroke of the hour, a chance fell to the Usuthu through Kugelani Madondo, in which he struck a long range effort which unfortunately sailed wide.
A chance fell to Travis Graham on the other end of the field, when he struck a powerful effort from 15-yards out, however, he couldn’t get it on target as it sailed above the crossbar.
The final stages of the game failed to produce any form of attacking flair in front of goal, as the teams saw at a frustrating goalless draw to share the spoils.
