The AmaZulu Glenwood HS Academy notched a groundbreaking victory over the weekend as Coach Thabiso Makhetha’s side beat Sekusile High School 1-0 in a closely contested affair at George Campbell grounds to the Kay Motsepe Cup.
Quewan King’s second half strike against the Madadeni based school ensured the school the R100 000 prize money and a spot to represent in the national playoffs.
Makhetha said of their feat: “We attribute this to the fact that at the beginning of the year we set ourselves a target that we want to be the best in KZN.”
“We had to dig really deep and believe in ourselves against strong opposition – especially in the semifinal up against Ndalela High School.
“I thought that was the turning point in our road to lifting the trophy. We had struggled to play our normal game and only scored the lead late in the second half. They equalized immediately afterwards and we only got the winner through the last kick of the match,” said Makhetha.
Siya Mfusi scored both goals in semifinal.
