The 2019 edition of the Engen Knockout Challenge is set to return on the 28-30 June at the Moses Mabhida sports complex.
The exciting football tournament was launched at the Moses Mabhida stadium on 18 June 2019 where 16 teams who will form part of the challenge were revealed.
The SAFA EThekwini Region facilitated the qualification process where teams played against each other on 18 May 2019.
The Engen Knockout Challenge has been running successfully and efficiently over the last 17 years and this year’s official hashtags of the tournament to be used on social media are #EKOC2019, #YourJourneyStartsHere and #EngenSoccer.
The four seeded teams that were also included in the draw were AmaZulu FC, Royal Eagles FC, Malevane Spartak FC and Maritzburg City.
AmaZulu Community Trust Programs Manager and Tournament Director, Mpho Dintwa said: ‘’ we’re one of the five regions that will be hosting the challenge and we would also like to applaud Engen as our main sponsors for being with us for so many years. ‘’
‘’We know how big the region is and the amount of talent we have so we also extended an invitation through the SAFA structures to two teams , Malevane Spartak from the Ugu region and Maritzburg City from the UMgungundlovu Region,’’ said Dintwa.
Secretary of SAFA EThekwini Region Zama Buthelezi elaborated his contentment over the progress of the tournament over the years and how they have managed to over some of the challenges that they encountered.
‘’ From the side of SAFA I am very happy because we have managed to overcome the challenge of age cheating which was a huge stumbling block for us, ‘’ said Buthelezi.
‘’ To play in the tournament you must have registered through SAFA , we are also happy that the players that will be developed through SAFA will be able to go straight and play in the MDC and also develop KZN players to play in the MDC teams that are based in KZN,’’ he concluded.
Some of the players who have played in the Engen knockout challenge have gone on to represent the country in the 2019 under-20 FIFA World Cup in Poland , The Provisional SA U-23 squad for the 2020 Olympics qualifiers and the Bafana Bafana Afcon squad.
The winner of the tournament will qualify for the Engen Champ of Champs which will take place later this year.
