Ayanda Dlamini scored in the dying minutes of the game to hand AmaZulu a 1-0 win over SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Lucas ‘Masterpiece’ Moripe Stadium on Tuesday night.
Matsatsanta subsequently missed a golden opportunity to go second, which they would have done with a win over Usuthu.
Cavin Johnson made no fewer than four changes to the side that beat Orlando Pirates 2-1 last time out.
With Edwin Gyimah, David Mathebula and Bradley Grobler out due to injury, Thabiso Nkoana, Mame Niang and Morne Nel were included in the starting XI, while there was also a debut for 18-year old Skhumbuzo Mazibuko.
Nkoana and debutant Mazibuko went close for the home side early on, with both flashing their respective efforts just wide of Zikalala’s post.
Bongani Ndulula brushed Ronwen Williams’ left hand post in the 19th minute, in what was Usuthu’s first chance at goal.
Then Mazibuko went even closer for the hosts five minutes later. The 18-year old lost his marker before directing a powerful effort past Zikalala but not the crossbar.
AmaZulu should’ve had the lead at the break, were it not for a great save from Williams. A flowing move from the right flank ended with Ayanda Dlamini who somehow failed to find the back of the net from point-blank range.
The home side continued to spend a large portion of the match in their own half but Matsatsantsa looked dangerous on the counter.
Sibusiso Khumalo’s potent effort from range on the hour mark looked destined for the back of the net but Zikalala was well positioned and gathered the ball with ease.
Morne Nel then went close for Matsatsantsa in the 70th minute – a cheeky chip seemed to have Zikalala beaten but the ball landed on the roof of the net.
Then Ayanda Dlamini stunned the home crowd in the 87th minute. Bevan Fransman’s mis-placed pass was played straight back into the area; Dlamini gathered the pass before burying the ball past Williams, 1-0.
Bennett Chenene and Dino Ndlovu had opportunities to rescue a point for the hosts late on but failed to find the back of the net.
The win for Usuthu moves them up to fourth place on the Premiership log while United slip down into fifth.
