After winning the Uthungulu Mayoral tournament on Saturday, AmaZulu coach Steve Barker said that the victory will go a long way to boosting his players’ confidence.
AmaZulu reached the final after beating Milford FC 2-0 with the majority of their squad being under 17 players. They then beat Mamelodi Sundowns 5-4 on penalties after playing to a 1-1 draw.
“Yes, the aim was not merely to win the cup but to use this tournament as a tool to assess our players and prepare for our next league match.
“Winning is good for our players as it is important to develop that winning mentality. I think and hope they will carry the same attitude throughout the season,” said Barker.
There were also more positives coming out of the weekend as players like Ayanda Dlamini was given a role to lead the team.
“Ayanda is one of our experienced players and it was good to see him scoring and leading the team with dignity. All the players were outstanding and they showed a willingness to fight till the end especially against Sundowns.
“If we continue working hard like this, I believe great things will come. Our under 17 players were also outstanding,” he said.Share
