Cup Draw not different from league matches: Tovey

March 1, 2010

The Moses Mabhida Stadium will have its first taste of knock-out action when AmaZulu do battle with KZN neighbours Maritzburg United in the 2010 Telkom Knockout Cup.

This was the news that greeted AmaZulu Coach Neil Tovey following Monday’s draw at the Wanderers Ballroom in Illovo.

While silverware now beckons in the knock-out competitions, ‘Mokoko’ says he remains focused on the final PSL match against Supersport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium on the weekend.

“It is always very good to be drawn at home but obviously we’ve got to change things around knowing they have beaten us twice this season.

“It is not any different from the league matches, but we will give our best to make our fans happy,” said Tovey.

Technical Advisor to the Usuthu bench, Clive Barker, believes this could well be AmaZulu’s best chance for glory this season.

“If you play well to win three matches or four matches you could be in the final. Its an exciting competition it takes me back to the memory of beating Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 in the 1992 Coca Cola Cup Final.

“We will have to work hard for this to come true because I have been equally impressed with Maritzburg’s performance this season. Compliments must go to their owners; the Farouk brothers, Afzal Khan, coach Ernst Middendorp and his technical staff and the players.

“But is of vital importance that we continue with our improved second half league performances going into the Telkom Knockout competition, ” said Barker.

* The exact date of the match against Maritzburg is not yet confirmed - the last-16 phase is scheduled for March 13, 14, 20 and 21.
