Tovey fails to make it three in a row

Usuthu Coach Neil Tovey has called on his men to regroup after AmaZulu were stopped dead in their tracks by a 10 man Maritzburg United in front of a lively crowd at Moses Mabhida Stadium’s opening match.

“Obviously we very disappointed. We needed to be a lot more clinical because their defence coped very well. I don’t think we were bad. All that we needed was to get right that final finish.

“We’ve had a good run but this loss just means we have to regroup. We didn’t deal with the dead ball situations.”

After a few hiccups for Usuthu, Tovey has set new sights for the team and believes the loss means they will have to regroup before they face Kaizer Chiefs in mid week.

They will have to do just that because what they failed to do on Sunday – convert chances - could prove costly if it continues through the remainder of the season.

“We didn’t have that clinical finish and didn’t get the final pass right. When we did get the ball to the player we needed to, we still lost possession, either that, or we didn’t get the right runs off the ball,” said Tovey.

The introductions that came in the second half made a difference according to Tovey as Maritzburg were looking like a more determined team after the AmaZulu players appeared to have relaxed after Peter Petersen was sent off for a professional foul.

“We needed to change the tempo of our game in the final third; we needed to get that acceleration in going forward. We did make the changes in the second half but we knew they would always have people behind the ball.

“Though we had our chances earlier in the game we just couldn’t finish them. Bradley headed past the far right post in the first half. We must now make sure that we re-group”, Tovey says.

AmaZulu’s immediate concern comes on Wednesday when they meet an on-form Kaizer Chiefs at the Orlando Stadium.
