“Thami is an excellent player, he’s a great passer of the ball plus and he has great vision, I was just waiting for the right time to introduce him into the fray,” Neil Tovey told kickoff.com after the player’s debut in the loss against Golden Arrows.
This is the sort of comment that has encouraged Thami to take up football as a career, like his big brother Siyabonga Sangweni at Arrows.
Since the loss of their mother to illness at the beginning of pre-season training, Thami has had to rely on his brother for support and together they have been the rock of their family and their hometown.
“I grew up playing soccer, it was the only sport that I was interested in. It all started from playing with gents on the streets. ‘Brazo’ (Siyabonga) told me to take my talents seriously and focus in turning pro.”
AmaZulu’s squad has about six players from Empangeni including Bafo Biyela, now transfer-listed, a player Thami describes as a role model.
“People might point to the fact that I am a youngster, but I feel I’m ready. With the support of my teammates and guys like Bafo, I cannot go wrong,”said Sangweni.
Off the Field
“I listen to R & B most of the time but all music is music, my roommate Simanga (Biyela) is into house, so that’s how I relax. With cellphones, I’m comfortable with my Samsung I900. The guys here call me Cheese boy but my childhood nickname was General.”
Former Clubs
Dondotha All Stars (SAB League), Golden Chiefs, Love and Peace.
He went to Dondotha High School in Empangeni and Mgezeni High School and is yet to finish his matric.
General maintains that he’s a reserved person and won’t be swayed by the sudden limelight.
“The guys often scold me at training for being quiet but its something I’m proud of, because my mother taught me that talking too much gets you on the wrong side of everything, ” said Thami.
