Goals from Bayanda Shangase, Sbusiso Maluleke and Charlie Hlalele secured a 3-1 win over Orlando Pirates on 09 September in their opening 2018/2019 Multichoice Diski Challenge match.
The match was the second fixture on offer during the pandemonium producing diski festival showpiece at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Harmmasdale.
AmaZulu dominated proceedings as early as the first whistle. They waited only seconds for their reward after Shangase was fouled in the penalty box.
Shangase slotted past the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper with ease to give Usuthu the lead before Maluleke pounced with a header in the 13th minute much to the horror of the experienced Jackson Mabokgwane manning the sticks on the day.
AmaZulu Coach Ayanda Dlamini lauded his young troops for maintaining their calm even after Pirates earned a lifeline in the 58th minute when Smiso Bophela scored for the visitors.
‘’The boys played well under pressure, especially in the first,’’ Dlamini.
Bucs were undone by bustling runs from the wings on many occasions as Man of the Match, Charlie Hlalele, together Somila Ntsundwana showed them no respect.
The latter was brought down in the 79th minute in the box to earn Usuthu a penalty which was converted by Hlalele, earning an upset against his former team.
‘’Getting players to play for the first team for us would be our achievement,’’ said Dlamini with regards to what he hopes to achieve with the squad.
The former Usuthu striker also thanked supporters who cheered the boys in green and white emphatically from the stands.
The AmaZulu Reserves are currently in fourth position on the Multichoice Diski Challenge log standings.
The wrap up of the weekend’s matches saw 7 sides earning maximum points including Usuthu’s upcoming opponents, Mamelodi Sundowns. The match will be played at the TUT Stadium on 16 September 2018. Kickoff 12:00.Share
