AmaZulu stunned by stubborn Ubuntu

Temptation Chiwunga of Ubuntu Cape Town challenged by Ovidy Karuru of AmaZulu during the 2018 Nedbank Cup

Ubuntu Cape Town defeated AmaZulu FC 3-2 in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 match at the King Zwelitihini Stadium on Friday night.

The win sees Ubuntu advance to the the quarter-finals, while Usuthu are eliminated from the competition.

The hosts dominated possession in the opening stages of the game as they looked to snatch an early goal which would have unsettled the Ubuntu defence.

However, it was the visitors, who opened the scoring through Clint Fredericks. The midfielder scored with a header to make it 1-0 to Ubuntu in the seventh minute.

Usuthu were able to create a few chances, but Jabulani Ncobeni and his team-mates could not beat Ubuntu goalkeeper Buti Khoza.

Ubuntu managed to double their lead through Duncan Adonis, who beat AmaZulu keeper Boalefa Pule to make it 2-0 to the visitors in the 25th minute.

The Cape Town side continued to frustrate the Usuthu attackers with the half-time break fast approaching.

The score was 2-0 to Ubuntu at half-time with the National First Division (NFD) side having frustrated AmaZulu.

It took only three minutes for Kamohelo Mahlatsi to make it 3-0 to Ubuntu after the hosts had failed to clear their lines.

Usuthu tried to pull one back in the 64th minute, but Khoza produced a good save to deny Sibusiso Mabiliso, who had made a good overlapping run from the left-back position.

Pressure was piled on the visitors’ defence by Usuthu and they managed to make it 3-1 through substitute Mabhuti Khenyeza, who scored with a header in the 77th minute.

It should have been 3-2 in the 78th minute, but the hosts hit the upright twice within a minute with Khoza well beaten.

Khoza then a produced a brilliant save to deny Ncobeni, who had cut inside before unleashing a powerful shot which was blocked by the keeper with five minutes left.

Usuthu did make it 3-2 in the dying minutes of the game and it was Ovidy Karuru, who scored with a powerful shot in the 90th minute.

Khoza then made late saves denying Khenyeza and Ncobeni to ensure that Ubuntu emerged 3-2 winners over AmaZulu.
