AmaZulu narrowly beaten by SuperSport

AmaZulu suffered a narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of hosts SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

A penalty from Aubrey Modiba decided the game, with Matsatsantsa moving level with fourth-placed Mamelodi Sundowns on 11 points, while Usuthu remain at the bottom of the log with two points.

The first real opening of the game arrived in the 14th minute, with United’s Thamsanqa Gabuza doing great work to set up Evans Rusike with a clear chance in front of goal but AmaZulu goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha came quickly off his line to make a fine save.

AmaZulu had some dangerous moments of their own in the first 30 minutes, with Siyethembe Sithebe shooting just over the crossbar direct from a free kick, while Bongi Ntuli sent a powerful drive on target only to see Ronwen Williams pluck the ball out of the air.

The game took a key turn late in the first half when AmaZulu defender Thembela Sikhakhane was guilty of a hand-ball in the 18-yard area, leading to a penalty for the hosts. Aubrey Modiba scored from the spot kick to make it 1-0 to SuperSport in the 40th minute.

Usuthu were first to threaten in the second half, with Ntuli pulling the trigger on a low shot in the 62nd minute but his hopes of an equaliser were thwarted by an excellent save from Williams, who dived low to his right to turn the ball away.

SuperSport had chances to kill off the game in the dying minutes, but AmaZulu goalkeeper Mbatha was in inspired form, keeping a fierce drive from Rusike and denying substitute Kudakwashe Mahachi both in a one-on-one situation and from a long-range shot.

Yet his efforts were in vain, with Matsatsantsa able to see out the 90 minutes and pick up a third league win of the season. Usuthu are still awaiting their first three-pointer of 2019/20.

AmaZulu will return to league action on Tuesday when they host Cape Town City, while SuperSport’s midweek match against Bloemfontein Celtic has been postponed to give them extra preparation time for the MTN8 final against Highlands Park next Saturday at Orlando Stadium.
