AmaZulu Glenwood Academy were crowned champions of the 2017 32 team Kloof High School Soccer Tournament after beating Hilton College 3-1 in the final on 03 July 2017.
The Pietermaritzburg based Hilton succumbed to a late first half lead that came from Siyabonga Mfusi after what had seemed like a well pepped up final from the inland side.
Glenwood came back much more intent in the second half to seal the victory and were rewarded sooner with strikes from Joash Pillay and Thami Nombika.
A miscommunication between goalkeeper, Guy Alcock who had a brilliant tournament and his defense gifted the opposition the single goal that would be small consolation to Hilton.
Hilton College had to beat defending champions and Bloemfontein Celtic academy side, HTS Louis Botha 2-0 on penalties after a hotly contested semi-final affair.
Accoding to Head Coach, Thabiso Makhetha the victory was down to team work but special mention has to go to midfield general, Minenhle Cebekhulu who was crowned Player of the Tournament.
Makhetha said their best came when they faced Western Cape school Paul Roos Gymnasium High School in the quarter finals 4-0.
“That was our best performance of the day we played very well. I’m moe happy that we have improved from last year’s quarterfinal loss to eventual winners HTS Louis Bootha.
“It’s a continuation from us winning the Kay Motsepe last year in a way. One thing about development is knowing that we’re not stagnant, and its good to see maturity from the players.
Also the fact that we have 12 matrics in the school. We wanted to leave a mark, make history by winning all the local schools tournament,” said Makhetha.
Thami Nombika finished with the most goals in the tournament, with eight goals.
Other individual triumps: Captain Charl Reid, Minenhle Cebekhulu, Sandile Makhonza and Joash Pillay were all selected in the Team of the Tournament. New academy recuit Samkelo Magazela of Pine Town High school also made the cut.
