We continue with our history series as we look into the club's run in the 1987 Mainstay Cup..
An easy 4-0 win over Liverpool set the club on a good run in this cup competition. Moran 'Samora' Khulu, Joel Faya, Julius Chirwa and Pele Mncina eliminated any 'giant killer' ambitions from the amateur side.
Next to feel the wrath of Clive Barker's boys was Witbank Aces, whom we know today as Mpumalanga Black Aces. Deadly striker Owen Ndzimande put paid to Aces' cup dreams with a single strike in this home fixture.
Second Round
Usuthu's continued with their rampage as rivals Bush Bucks got the bitter end of legend Julius Chirwa's two strikes, with the only reply coming from David Magwaza.
The warpath remained clear as Leeds United were dumped by a single goal from Jimmy Ormashaw's boots in the semi-final.
The Final
The final proved to be a tightly fought affair against Kaizer Chiefs, who emerged winners after captain Marks 'Go Man Go' Maponyane rose to the occassion to score the only goal of the match in the 71st minute.
The side was then captained by Archie Radebe. Current first team coach Neil Tovey was in the AmaZulu squad, and in later years joined Chiefs.
