Amazulu vs Thanda for cancer awareness

AmaZulu and NFD Thanda Royal Zulu have partnered with CANSA Uthungulu by agreeing to play a football match to raise cancer awareness among men at the Richards Bay Sport Complex on Saturday 15h00.

The match which has been dubbed the ‘CANSA Kick-OFF’ 2011 coincides with the NGOs plan of educating the most fanatic of football supporters which according to CANSA Uthungulu Community Mobilizer, Maureen Dlamini are men.

“It’s always a fact that to reach men you have to use sport hence the CANSA Kick – Off.

For years women have been encouraged to detect female cancers early, now we want to encourage men to be proactive and by regular self-examination and having blood tests, help detect cancers early.

It is important for men to know their bodies, so they can recognize if something has changed and they can do something about it,” she said.

Early on before Wednesday’s training session commenced AmaZulu hosted 7 year old Wonderboy Mthembu who sufferers from T Cell Leukemia. The young boy has a dream of one day playing and owning a football club of his own. He enjoyed himself when got a chance of a life time to chat and train with the players.

AmaZulu captain Tapuwa Kapini promised the stakes will be high as the KZN bragging rights call for both sides to raise their game especially with both teams’ coaches Neil Tovey and Roger Palmgen having occupied the hot seats at either clubs before.

“Stakes will be high even though we are part of this initiative to inform our country and all our supporters that our men are also victims of Cancer as the soccer community,” said the Zimbabwean international

There will be an outreach campaign at Richards Bay’s Boardwalk Inkwazi Mall on Friday where both AmaZulu and Thanda players will dress 1000 people with CANSA ribbons as a campaign to raise awareness.
