'Usuthu' reach out to Hammarsdale kids

The KZN club recently took time off the day to day running of the club to visit Hammarsdale youth on a full day mentoring programme.

The Open Day was jointly hosted with the KZN Department of Arts and Recreation at primary school Intakemazolo.

It was honoured by the presence of AmaZulu coach Manqoba Mngqithi, General Manager Peter O’Connor, players and the renowned Pastor Vusi Dube of Ethekwini Christian Centre.

Part of what led to agreeing to partner with the Department of Arts and Culture was “to exchange ideas in the mentoring of young aspirant pupils through sport and other ways as well bringing the club closer to the school kids, ” said the said the brain child behind the idea Ronnie Moroka, who is Development and Schools Programme Coordinator at AmaZulu.

The former Durban Warriors coach, had a week before he conducted coaching clinics at the school along with Head of Scouting and second assistant coach Joel Faya.

Faya and coach Manqoba Mngqithi stressed the need for the aspiring young footballers to keep their football hopes hand in hand with school work.

AmaZulu players Muziwandile Khwela, Ntuthuko Dlamini, Philani Zikalala, Mxolisi Mayongo and Dumisani Zwane and the audience were well entertained by the youngsters’ singing of Usuthu composed songs, and the reciting of poems.

Intakemazolo was the only school in KZN that agreed to partake in a programme called Beatification of public spaces where kids will be able to draw positive messages.

The Department has already started this in areas like Mkhanyakude and in other Zululand areas.

Also government encourages programmes such as these that keep youth busy in the form of many things as well in playing sports.

"Our partnership with AmaZulu will also see the kids perhaps drawing and designing the AmaZulu logo or coming up with the AmaZulu theme song, and perhaps they will in turn get the opportunity to watch or become opening acts at home matches,” said the department’s Mrs CN Khumalo.
